Hydrogen Production

1 of 2
...

Right now hydrogen costs more to produce than conventional fuels such as gasoline. In addition, many of the more cost-effective production methods generate greenhouse gases.

Hydrogen is generally produced in two ways: by electrolysis and from synthesis gas.

Electrolysis uses electrical energy to separate the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water molecules. The electricity can come from any source, including renewable fuels and solar energy. Some scientists envision a future in which large arrays of solar panels provide enough electric current to mass-produce hydrogen by electrolysis.

Hydrogen can be produced from many sources:

Hydrocarbons
methane, propane, gasoline, diesel

Alcohols, recycling
methanol, ethanol, landfill gas, biogas, peanut shells

Water
by electrolysis, using solar or wind power

Other
sodium borohydride, algae
