Hydrogen gas can be used in a fuel cell to produce electricity. A fuel cell is like a battery. It has electrodes, electrolyte, and positive and negative terminals. But unlike a battery, which needs recharging, a fuel cell can produce electric current continuously as long as it is supplied with hydrogen and air. Fuel cells can be about twice as efficient as a gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine, because they waste less energy in creating heat. Fuel cells are also clean. Their main by-product is water. |
