Since the 1950s the U.S. space program has used photovoltaic cells to power satellites, space probes and the International Space Station. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), future possibilities include powering base camps on the moon and building solar photovoltaic collectors in space to convert radiant energy to electricity and beam it down to earth.
