A PV array is connected to an inverter. Inverters convert direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). AC electricity is typically required for household appliances such as radios, televisions and refrigerators. Inverters also have built-in safety features required by electric utilities. PV systems vary in complexity. Some are called a “stand-alone or off-grid” system, which means they are the sole source of power. Stand-alone systems may store electricity from PV cells in batteries and can be cost-effective for remote locations or when a small amount of energy is required. |
