Most of the energy used in homes, commercial buildings, industry and transportation comes from fossil fuels that took millions of years to form and are available in finite amounts. It is not a question of whether we will run out of fossil fuels, but when. Recall from Unit 1, Section 2, that scientists believe there is enough oil and gas to last another 100 years and enough coal for another 230 years.
